on the train to the sea a man sat next to me and said going underground’s fine when there’s nothing down the line except maybe sadness and hate a skin that’s translucent and gray she said we’re counting the centuries fast counting the centuries fast trying to find the feeling again moving against the wind she said wrap it around your hand don’t look too far ahead see yourself in the sun just like everyone she said we’re counting the centuries fast Mary’s photo fading last slow breath rebuilding the past she said you’ll see the sun again if you move far ahead past the sadness and hate a skin that’s translucent and vague he said we’re counting the centuries fast

about

"Another sui-generis telegram from Ryan Martin's haunted shack, sounding like it's being slipped to its recipient in a scuffed velvet envelope. A ham radio broadcast searching through a forest of bare trees and into the starry skies, hunting for someone else out there to confirm this overwhelming feeling. Secret Boyfriend's has long been the loneliest corpus in contemporary music, and the most embracing: a paean to the eternal—the undead—dreams of youth that linger like a squishy tumor (possibly benign) long after the body itself has begun its inevitable disintegration, growing older and withering around a tender blue flame. On side A, shivery, whispery new-wave folk songs lure you close for warmth—power-pop hooks cast in shades of open-hearted embarrassment and humility—only for side B to excavate the oozing dripscapes, dusty torture chambers, rusted shards of noise, and spectral remnants of past dramas that all lurk deeper inside the house, locating and exorcising the aggression within the melancholy. At every stage, there are melodies and rhythms that threaten never to resolve, minimalist chord changes and looping, crumbling thuds that push you forward toward the emotional infinite. Maybe you'll find someone to sway alongside you as you head for that cosmic light in the distance. But “there’s no abyss, you’re thinking of it wrong”: acceptance that the end is also always a possibility, and that dreams always exist. This tape might emanate from the land of the dead, but it's evidence that it's still possible to be alive within that world." - Jonathan Woollen

"Live in the Land of the Dead" is a collection of innerworld psychotopographical pieces originally formulated in the rockbottom / positively transformational year 2019, evenly split between guitar (oh no) -centric songwriting in a raw, underground 'indie' vein and various 'instrumentals' of warped tape loop ambient ("ODE2"). no-input rhythmic destruction ("95S2", "Jungle Tape"), and imaginary soundtracks ("Reaper's Kiss", "You've Always Known"). This unusually limited (for me anyway) timeframe of writing and recording lends a more cohesive quality in terms of lyrics, concerns of which are: surviving hurricanes and general self-preservation, acceptance of the ephemeral physical, alternately erotic and threatening dreams, self-fulfilling prophecy, reframing the void, renewal. Trying to find the feeling again, moving against the wind past the sadness and hate in the midst of cosmic die-offs and transition.

recorded 2019 at Cathedral ii falling down and crawling up by RM on cassette 8-track except 2, 3, 11, 15, 17 = computer, & 19 by Victoria Shen with a phone in Boston. Originally released in sketchier form as a tour tape for a September 2019 east coast / midwest "Together Alone" tour with Housefire. Revised / remixed 2022.
